Fall 2010 Gifted and Talented Education Program

The Alhambra Educational Foundation (AEF) announces the creation of a special instructional program designed specifically for Alhambra Unified School district (AUSD) GATE students in grades 3 to 8. The Fall 2010 Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program will run Thursday afternoons, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm, for eight (8) weeks, beginning October 7, 2010, and culminating December 9, 2010. Classes will be held at Monterey Highlands School, located at 400 Casuda Canyon Drive in Monterey Park.

Classes will be filled on a first-come first-served basis. A tuition fee of $125 will be charged per student for the eight-week class. These classes are only being offered to identified GATE students attending an AUSD school. Classes must meet minimum enrollment.

CLASSES OFFERED FALL 2010

Speech and Debate (Grades 3 and 4)
This course will cover the fundamental building blocks of public speaking: identifying goals, constructing the presentation and techniques for engaging the audience. Students will have the opportunity to create speeches, present to their peers, and receive immediate feedback. Students will participate in debates to address critical thinking skills. The focus will be on forming persuasive arguments, research and teamwork.

Robotics (Grades 5 and 6)
A hands-on approach is used to introduce the basic concepts of robotics. Student will work in teams to build and test increasingly more complex LEGO-based mobile robots. Students will learn hands-on technology and will develop fundamental programming skills by studying and modifying a simple robot. The history and ethics of robotics will be discussed.

Mock Trial (Grades 7 and 8)
In this hands-on class, students learn the fundamentals of trial procedures. Students act as plaintiff and defense attorneys, prosecutors, witnesses and judges. Students prepare their case and have a mock trial. Students will learn about the law, oral advocacy skills, critical thinking, and team building.

REGISTRATION

Registration will be by mail beginning July 1, 2010, and will be on a first-come first-served basis. Classes will be limited to the first 30 students to apply for each class. A wait list will be started when the class is full. Students on the wait list will be given priority registration in the Winter Session classes. The Winter Session classes will begin in January of 2011.

Use the registration form (available as a PDF file only). Students will not be registered until the AEF office has processed the tuition payment.

Tuition Payments
All fees are due at time of registration. Checks/Money Orders should be made payable to Alhambra Educational Foundation (AEF). The Foundation will accept Visa, MasterCard, and American Express credit cards for payment. A $25 service fee will be charged for all returned checks.

Refunds
Only a parent or guardian can request a refund. All refund requests must be made by written request to the Alhambra Education Foundation office. A $25 processing fee will be charged on all refund requests. No refunds will be given after September 1, 2010.

Transportation
School bus transportation will not be provided.
